The city of Sheffield is also a metropolitan borough in South Yorkshire, England, and its name stems from a field settlement by the River Sheaf, which now runs through the city.
Formerly part of West Yorkshire, Sheffield - still often called "The Steel City" - grew from largely industrial roots to include a wide economic base. The City of Sheffield was estimated at 530,300 residents in 2007, and it is one of the eight largest cities in England outside London, which form the English Core Cities Group. In total, the Sheffield City Region has a population of over 1,800,000.
Sheffield gained worldwide fame in the 19th century for its stell production. Many industryl innovations were developed here, including crucible (hence the famous snooker venue) and stainless steel. This fuelled nearly a tenfold population increase over the course of the Industrial Revolution. It gained its city status in 1893. International competition led to a decline in the traditional local industries over the 1970s and 1980s, while the nearby national coal industry also collapsed during the same period. This led to many people moving away from the area.
